Job posting: Director and Trade Justice Organizer
The Washington Fair Trade Coalition is seeking a talented organizer to direct the coalition’s work on behalf of people and the planet to achieve a fair global trading system.
The Director will be at the center of our campaign to influence NAFTA renegotiation, educating and mobilizing our coalition members and allied groups in these policy debates, securing support from elected officials, and building long-term vision and momentum for fair trade policies that put people and the planet above profits.
The Washington Fair Trade Coalition (www.washingtonfairtrade.org) is an established statewide coalition of labor, immigrants’ rights, environmental, justice, food security, health, family farm and faith-based organizations, committed to building the political power necessary to advance fair and just global trade policies.
Qualifications:
A candidate must demonstrate the ability to work in politically sensitive situations with diverse coalition partners. The candidate should also have familiarity with economic and social justice issues, particularly the impacts of “free trade” on workers, communities, and the environment.
The candidate will work directly with coalition partners, emphasize their common interests, connect their work in the context of globalization and trade policy, and seek creative and engaging campaign actions that bend our approach to globalization in a positive direction.
The candidate will manage coalition building, community organizing, media relations, lobbying, and field campaigns to build grassroots engagement and effective political advocacy. The Director works with an activist Board, and coordinates with similar trade justice organizations in other states and at the national level. This position requires travel within Washington State.
Principal Responsibilities:
The Director will be responsible both for leading legislative campaigns to influence NAFTA renegotiation, and for building long-term vision and momentum for fair trade policy.
The Director will:
- Be the “face” of the coalition on issues of globalization and trade, including initiating contacts with the media, conducting trainings on globalization, and speaking for the group in public venues and/or arranging for member organizations to do so
- Track national and local developments in trade policy and globalization
- Communicate updates and action alerts efficiently to the Coalition membership and activist network, via email, phone, the newsletter, website, op-eds, letters to the editor, and social media platforms
- Communicate directly with Congressional offices and other elected officials, organize lobbying visits, and mobilize activists
- Take the lead on creating strategies and action plans at the regional and statewide level
- Solicit involvement from coalition partners, build connections, grow the coalition, and create spaces where they can share ideas and connect with each other, including our annual fundraising breakfast.
Additional Responsibilities include:
- Work with the Executive Committee to develop a fundraising plan to support Coalition programs that includes dues collection, foundation grants, individual donor support, etc.
- Support WFTC activist hubs throughout the state, including coordination, supplies, solidarity campaigns, and training and leadership development opportunities.
Location & Compensation
This position is located in the Puget Sound region, but will require travel to congressional districts, primarily west of the Cascades. The organizer will work from the Washington Fair Trade Coalition office in Seattle’s International District, but some remote work is possible.
Position is full-time, salaried, $40,000/year. Benefits include paid sick leave, paid vacation, and health insurance stipend.
