Thanks to a huge effort by WA State Senator Maralyn Chase (D-Shoreline), strong grassroots pressure from the WFTC and our member groups, and excellent coordination by Sarah Edelman at Public Citizen, WA State Senate Bill SJM 8006, ‘Requesting that Congress Approve the US-Korea FTA died in committee!
The bill, instigate by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative corporate-funded organization promoting “small” government that produces model legislation for state lawmakers. Among ALEC’s primary funders are the infamous Koch brothers, the Kansas billionaires who are funding right-wing activities ranging from the Tea Party to Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s assault on Wisconsin public employees’ collective bargaining rights.
SJM 8006 was introduced at the end of February by Senators Stevens, Shin and Delvin with the goal of getting it onto the Senate floor just before the March 7th deadline.
WFTC is currently working to get WA State Legislators to sign-on to a ‘Dear colleague letter’ calling for a stop to Kor-US FTA and time for real trade policy reform.
