2009 Campaign Goals
-
Create a
groundswell of support through targeted education
This includes bringing our Fair Trade Road Show to our member
organizations regularly, to provide information about "free trade," fair
trade, and current lobbying or action opportunities.
-
Generate
support for the TRADE Act
WFTC will work with targeted members of Congress to encourage them to
co-sponsor the bill. In particular, we will target Rep. McDermott and
Rep. Reichert since they both are members of the Ways and Means
committee, with contact at least once every 2 months.
-
Complete 2nd Phase of Trade Stories Project
WFTC will
work with national partners to launch Trade Stories Project website (www.tradestories.org)
and publicize our project nationally and locally. WFTC will complete at
least 10 additional interviews, focusing on Boeing workers, agricultural
workers, and immigrant workers.
-
Conduct local legislative efforts
As part of
Sweatfree Washington, WFTC will support efforts to pass anti-sweatshop
purchasing legislation. Targets may include Washington State, city of
Seattle, or County offices.
This work may also focus on sweatfree and green uses of national stimulus
package funds in Washington State.
-
Stop pending free trade agreements (FTAs)
If any of the
pending FTAs with Colombia, Panama, or South Korea are introduced, WFTC
will work hard to stop their passage. TRADE Act would be promoted as
fair and sustainable alternative to these NAFTA-style bills.
